Lying 14 miles west of Central London is London Heathrow- London’s major international airport and the largest airport in the UK. Having handled a record 80.8 million passengers in 2019, it has undergone an extensive expansion across the entire premises in order to cater to the rising number of travellers per year.
In 2008, after years of construction, Terminal 5 was opened for use and in 2018 measured movement of over 32.8 million passengers over 210, 723 flights- making it the busiest terminal across the Heathrow complex.
Looking to pursue further enhancement within the terminal, Heathrow bosses sought a company who could provide a bespoke LED solution that would benefit not only the Heathrow brand and needs of the airport itself, but also the millions of passengers who use it annually.
This was a great opportunity for the team at infiLED EM, who having already engaged in a wide variety of large, custom installations, were the perfect fit for the job.
The plan for Heathrow was to develop and regenerate the World Duty Free store in Terminal 5; to align with other the WDF stores situated in LHR, as well as enhance consumer experience by providing a fresh, eye-catching aesthetic.
Bendacs skilled team conceptualised and designed an impressive 25m curved ribbon display- using infiLEDs smart and versatile SF display series- to be installed above the entrance of WDF. With the intention of increasing visibility within the Terminal 5 departure lounge in addition to significantly improving visual appeal for airport users, the installation aimed to create a striking and modern display that was representative of the exciting potential offered at an airport.
The project utilised infiLED EM’s highly flexible SF series- a prime display for installations which require malleable and adjustable screens to fit pre-existing structures.
Consisting of soft, highly flexible PCBs, the SFs adaptable nature allows for the creation of convex and concave displays, with special attention to cylindrical designs also falling within its remit. Adaptable, lightweight and versatile in nature, the SF boasts an advanced magnetic system, enabling easy assembly in addition to front accessibility for maintenance.
infiLEDs SF series is equipped to deliver quality content over a range of applications, securing its place as an unrivalled LED display for creative projects and in turn making it the perfect screen for the installation at Heathrow.
Working in conjunction with ADXBA -purveyors of high impact digital solutions- and BLYNK, the team mounted a 24.64m x 0.8m SF ribbon display along the bulkhead of entrance to WDF, following the natural curve of the pre-existing structure.
With a pixel pitch of 4mm and brightness of 1000nits, the screen can be viewed clearly from a considerable distance whilst maintaining a clear and defined picture as well as providing superior viewing under harsh airport lighting conditions.
Installing in airports is difficult at the best of times, marking this specific installation – in the incredibly busy LHR – a great success for all involved. Seen by thousands of travellers and employees every day, the display is a testament to the great service provided by infiLED EM. Our skilled design, engineering and project management teams have delivered the perfect, customised solution, inclusive of all requirements, that will benefit people for generations to come and we look forward to participating in more exciting projects in the near future.
